Set of 10 Hans Wegner Teak & Cane Dining Chairs
Denmark, ca. 1950s. A rare and early set of 10 Model JH501 dining chairs designed by Hans Wegner - manufactured by cabinet maker Johannes Hansen. Each features a solid teak frame with flared arms and attractive caned backrest. Frames and backrests are all original with rich patina. Woven cane seats have been professionally restored by an expert craftsman. Branded manufacturer’s mark to underside. All in excellent vintage condition with minor age appropriate wear and ready for use. A very handsome and nearly impossible to find large set.
Referred to by Wegner himself simply as “the round chair” or “the round one”, the JH501 chair is known as one the most distinct designs of the period. While in the employ of cabinet maker Johannes Hansen, Wegner first introduced The Round Chair at the 1949 Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition to immediate international acclaim, helping establish Danish modernism’s influence in mid-century aesthetics. Only a few years after its introduction, The Round Chair was added to the permanent at the MoMA in 1953.
Dimensions: 19.5” wide x 16.5” deep x 30” high; 16.75” seat height.
