Edwin & Mary Scheier Ceramic Pitcher

Edwin & Mary Scheier Ceramic Pitcher
USA, ca. 1940s. A charming ceramic pitcher by Edwin Scheier (1910-2008) and Mary Scheier (1908-2007). Features earthenware construction with applied handle finished in a crystalline ochre glaze. An expressive take on a more traditional shape, this is quite possibly the perfect little brown jug. Inscribed signature to underside, the condition is excellent.
Edwin and Mary Scheier’s lifelong collaboration began in the 1930s when they worked for the Works Progress Administration. Originally traveling puppeteers, and largely self-taught, they won various awards in national and international competitions for their ceramics. From 1940 to 1960, they taught at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, leaving a rich creative legacy.
An elegant - yet utilitarian - vessel for milk or orange juice on the breakfast table!
