USA, ca. late 19th century. A large hand-woven folk art gathering basket - most likely of Pennsylvania Dutch origin. Features a simple, rustic form made of rye straw coiling tightly woven with contrasting oak splints. Exterior is finished with early black paint. Contrasting yellow band adds an interesting graphic touch. Perfect for holding fruit in the kitchen, stashing keys and mail, or just as a lovely decorative object. Overall very good antique condition with an honest patina and appealing character.
