Max Kuehne Silver Leaf Chest

Max Kuehne Silver Leaf Chest

$7,800.00

USA, ca. 1940s. A hand-painted silver leaf dresser attributed to German born artist Max Kuehne (1880-1968). Features all wood construction with four drawers—each with brass drop pulls and escutcheons. Decorated with floral designs and motifs, incised and hand-painted on a ground of polychrome, silver leaf and shellac. Carved scalloping on top, legs and drawers come together in a pleasing geometric composition. A sophisticated and well-made Arts & Crafts interpretation of the Rococo style. In excellent vintage condition, it would be stunning in a foyer or bedroom.

Max Kuehne immigrated to New York at the turn of the century, studying under William Merritt Chase, Keneth Hayes and Robert Henri, gaining early notoriety in painting. After a sojourn back to Europe where he was inspired by both old-world practices and modern European design, he soon expanded his practice to frame-making, decorative objects and furniture. His work sits in noted private collections and public collections including The Barnes Foundation, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Dimensions: 38” wide x 20” deep x 32.5” high.
