USA, ca. 1950. An early modernist table lamp by Eugene Deutch (1904-1959). Features handmade earthenware construction with organic teardrop form. Subtle sgrafitto surface decoration and soft celadon glaze enhance overall design. Incised signature to bottom of base. Professionally rewired with a brown silk cord and fitted with a new natural linen shade, the condition is excellent.

Born in Budapest, Deutch moved to Chicago in 1927 - after studying with Constantin Brâncuși in Paris. He completed classes at the Art Institute, and eventually opened his first studio in 1934. Embracing what he referred to as the “modest simplicity of clay,” Deutch celebrated variation and irregularity - creating forms that while modern in shape were quite personal in feel. From spending time with the WPA during the Depression, and discovering folk pottery in Mexico, Deutch’s work maintained a tactile and unpretentious quality. His work was included in the 1946 Useful Objects exhibit at MOMA - alongside designers such as Eva Zeisel and Russel Wright. His pieces were collected by the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright - and even retailed by Artek-Pascoe in New York.
