Pol Bury Hotel St. Moritz

Pol Bury Hotel St. Moritz

$2,500.00

Italy, ca. 1966. A large color serigraph titled “San Moritz, NY” by Belgian artist and kinetic sculptor Pol Bury (1922–2005). Features a striking monochromatic print on stretched linen depicting a warped rendering of the historic Hotel St. Moritz in Midtown Manhattan. The artist referred to these works as ‘Cinetisations’ - photo-based pieces in which he cut architectural and art photos into strips to then create a distorted reconstruction of the original subject. Bury explained the concept as his attempt to “reveal the slow-motion work of gravity… to give an air of liberty to that which thinks itself immutable.”

From an edition of only 11, printed by Italian publisher Sergio Tosi e Paolo Bellasich in Milan. Most of Bury’s New York based Cinetisations were printed in very small runs - and the serigraph-on-linen method was otherwise scarcely used by the artist. Signed and numbered on the reverse. In excellent vintage condition with original gilt wood frame.

Pol Bury was a member of the post-war avant-garde movement known as CoBrA, founded in Paris by experimental artists mainly from Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. His work is held in several international collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate gallery in London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Dimensions: 40.25” wide x 32” high x 1.5” deep.
