England, ca. 1850s. An antique miniature portrait signed by W. Murray and dated 1851. Features a thoughtfully rendered profile of a Rosina Farmer - noted as being 55 years old in 1865, so most likely in her early 40s when this was painted. While portraits of this era tend to be quite serious - or even dour - we were drawn to the brightness of her eyes and the overall warmth of her expression. The handling of the lace collar, buttons, and hair all add a spark of life to something created so long ago.

While we cannot discover much about W. Murray, he seems to have specialized in miniature portraits and silhouettes - making us think he was most likely an itinerant artist. We were able to find other examples of his work featuring sitter’s with their dogs, which are rendered with equal sensitivity.

Presented as found in original rosewood frame with gilt fillet. Overall excellent antique condition. A lovely portrait to be around.
