William Watting Teak Sideboard

William Watting Teak Sideboard

$4,400.00

Denmark, ca. 1950s. An attractive cabinet or sideboard by William Watting (1900-1973). Features sturdy old growth teak construction with two sliding doors that open to reveal generous storage. Birch felt-lined drawers are great for flatware, linens, and serving pieces. (How great are those little teak pegs?) Minimalist recessed pulls, sculptural cradle base, and finished back all make for an overall elegant design. Versatile scale makes this piece ideal for a dining room - or even as a media console in a living room or den. Professionally refinished - the condition is excellent with a rich luster to the wood.

Born in Boston, MA, William Watting began his career as an architect - working in the office of Walter Gropius in the late 1920s. He was one of the first industrial designers to experiment with plywood, especially in the years after WWII. As a freelance designer, Watting worked for companies in Europe - as well as American manufacturers such as Heywood-Wakefield. He also produced designs for the US Navy and US Army. While a relatively obscure name, Watting’s forms demonstrate both a timeless simplicity and functionality.

Dimensions: 59” long x 17.75” deep x 31” high.
