USA, ca. 1930s. An attractive desk or side chair by Wolgang Hoffman (1900-1969) for Howell. Born in Vienna, Hoffmann was the son of noted architect and Wiener Werkstätte founder, Josef Hoffmann. As Howell’s resident designer from 1934 to 1942, he created a number of designs for chromed steel furniture with a strong Machine Age or Bauhaus sensibility. This example features a cantilevered frame with black enameled metal seat and back. Ergonomic and quite comfortable, this would piece would work well in a compact home office - or in a hallway, foyer, etc. In overall very good vintage condition with appropriate age and surface patina.
