Max Kuehne Silver Leaf Headboard

Max Kuehne Silver Leaf Headboard
USA, ca. 1940s. A remarkable king size headboard by German born artist Max Kuehne (1880-1968). Depicting a pair of feeding deer in a forested landscape, equally stunning and poetic in execution. Incised and hand-painted on a ground of polychrome, silver leaf and shellac. Made of solid wood, with hand carved bevel and simple, stepped finials to each side of the top curve. A truly exquisite focal point - worthy of building a bedroom around. In excellent vintage condition with a rich patina. Easily mounts to a standard king frame.
Max Kuehne immigrated to New York at the turn of the century, studying under William Merritt Chase, Keneth Hayes and Robert Henri, gaining early notoriety in painting. After a sojourn to Europe where he was inspired by both old-world practices and modern European design, he soon expanded his practice to frame-making, decorative objects and furniture. His work sits in noted private collections and public collections including The Barnes Foundation, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
While unsigned, like other Kuehne pieces we have encountered, the form and workmanship is undeniably his.
