USA, ca. 1950s or 1960s. A moody hard edge painting by New York artist Paul Hollister (1918-2004. Features a bold composition in oil on canvas that very much brings to mind the shifting shapes of Manhattan at night. Paul Hollister was a painter, writer, collector, and glass historian that wrote about a variety of subjects - ranging from art history and journalism to his numerous books on glass paperweights / decorative arts. Born in New York and raised in Boston, Hollister moved back to NYC after graduating from Harvard. He also taught and wrote book reviews for The New York Times, New York Post, and The (Manchester) Guardian. His Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights (1969) is one of those books that most antique dealers have hiding in their stack.
Excellent vintage condition with estate stamp to reverse.
